About grey checkmark

The grey checkmark is for governments and multilateral organizations.

We add visual identity signals like labels and checkmarks on account profiles to provide more context about — and help distinguish — different types of accounts. Users who qualify will receive a grey checkmark next to their username, indicating that the account represents an official government/multilateral organization or individual. Any government or multilateral accounts that do not qualify under our grey checkmark criteria can check if they’re eligible for Verified Organizations.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Government Individuals

National-level: Heads of state (presidents, monarchs, and prime ministers) and their deputies and spouses; cabinet members or ministers and their deputies; members of Congress or Parliament; head spokespersons of government entities; and ambassadors.

Note: An incoming head of state may receive a grey badge when a definitive successor or election winner emerges. If there is dispute in election results, a grey badge will not be applied until the verdict is clear.

State-level: Governors and chief ministers.

Note: We accept all positions equivalent in status to those listed above.

2. Government Organizations

National, State, and Local Levels: Government agencies, ministries, and their specialized departments; legislative bodies and their committees; embassies and consulates.

3. Multilateral Organizations

Global, Regional and National Levels: International government organizations and agencies; supranational organizations.

4. Multilateral Individuals

Global-level: The head(s) and deputy-head(s) of an international government organizations.

When do accounts lose grey checkmarks?

Grey checkmarks are for current government officials and organizations only. For example:

  • An account will lose its grey checkmark once the account holder is no longer in office. For example, an outgoing president of the United States would lose their grey checkmark on inauguration day.

  • An organizational account will lose its grey checkmark if the agency/department/ministry is disbanded or reorganized.
