About Subscriptions creators

Subscriptions can help people on X earn monthly income from the content they create. Specifically, you may get paid a share of the revenue X earns from Subscriptions offering your most engaged followers an extra level of access and bonus content.

Creators globally who meet the eligibility requirements can apply to participate in the Subscriptions program. Subscriptions purchases are currently available globally on X for iOS, Android and web.

Getting started with Subscriptions

How do Subscriptions work?

If you are selected to participate in the Subscriptions program, people on the platform can pay X to Subscribe to you. They’ll receive access to perks you include in your offering, such as bonus content and direct interactions with you. When Subscribers reply to you, you'll see a badge next to their name so it’s easier to identify and connect with them.

You may get paid a share of revenue X earns from people who pay to Subscribe to you. Read our Subscriptions Creator Terms to learn more about revenue potential.

What features are available in Subscriptions?

Exclusive posts
People who have a Subscriptions offering can share Subscribers-only posts with their Subscribers.

Subscriber badge
Subscribers will stand out with badges next to their name whenever they reply to the person they’ve Subscribed to. These badges are public.

Subscribers Tab
Subscriptions creators (on iOS only) can now find a tab in their Notifications timeline that’s dedicated to Subscriber activity.

Subscription links
A dedicated link to your Subscription page lets you share information about your Subscription offering on and off X so you can grow your audience.

Subscriptions Community
Subscriptions creators will gain access to the official Subscriptions Creators Feedback Community on X where they can connect with each other. Creators who want to participate in the Ccommunity are able to request to join.

Subscriber-only replies
Creators can now choose to limit replies on their public posts to only their subscribers. Creators’ posts will still be public, but only people with an active subscription to the creator can reply to the post.

Subscriber-only Spaces
Subscriptions creators can host live subscriber-only conversations when they start a Space and select “Only Subscribers can join.” Read more about how to use Spaces.

Subscriptions creators (on web) can edit their Subscriptions introduction and description to change their offerings.

As we roll out further, we hope to include newsletters and other X features as potential bonus content.

What’s the eligibility criteria to participate in Subscriptions?

To be eligible for Subscriptions, you must meet our minimum application requirements:

  1. Be 18 years or older
  2. Have at least 500 followers
  3. Active in the past 30 days

To see the complete list of eligibility criteria, please read our Subscriptions policy.

Who can sign up to participate in Subscriptions?

At this time, Subscriptions Creators can sign up globally in countries supported by our payments provider who meet the minimum eligibility criteria. If you are eligible to apply, submit an application from the main menu of your X app. If you’re eligible, but not selected, we’ll add you to our waitlist.

Where can I find the Subscriptions application?

  1. Navigate to the main menu.
  2. Select Monetization.
  3. Select Subscriptions.

How will I know the status of my Subscriptions application?

If you meet the minimum requirements, and you’re approved to have a Subscriptions offering, you’ll see your status change where you found your Subscriptions application. You’ll need to agree to the Subscriptions Creator Terms to apply.

To check if the status of your application changes, navigate to the main menu, select Monetization, then select Subscriptions.

What content will I be expected to offer?

Ultimately, the content you create is up to you. Here are some types of content you might offer Subscribers in posts made just for them:

  • Share unscripted thoughts.
  • Ask for ideas and opinions with extra posts.
  • Give personal replies only your Subscribers can see.

Will non-Subscribers see my content?

Non-Subscribers will see your regular public posts, but they won’t see your Subscription posts. They also won’t see any of your Subscription posts sent via link or in a Direct Message.

Subscribers can Quote or repost your Subscription posts, but when they do, non-Subscribers only see additional comments on them. They won’t see reposts of your Subscription posts at all. Instead, they’ll need to Subscribe to you in order to see your Subscription posts.

Are Subscriptions available on iOS, Android, and web?

Subscriptions are available for purchase globally on iOS and Android, and web.

What if I decide I don't want to participate in Subscriptions anymore?

If you’re approved to have a Subscriptions offering and decide to stop participating, you’ll be able to deactivate your account from twitter.com and Android devices.

Note: It isn’t currently possible to deactivate your account from an iOS device. We recommend Subscriptions Creators on iOS to deactivate their account from the web.

Deactivating your Subscriptions account will notify your Subscribers and remove the Subscriptions button from your profile.

I deactivated my Subscriptions offering, but want to start it again. What should I do?

Once you deactivate your Subscriptions offering, your application will be deleted. If at a later time you’d like to have a Subscriptions offering, please apply again.

Getting paid

Who sets the price of Subscriptions?

A creator sets the monthly price of their Subscription offering by choosing from one of the price points made available by X.

*Note: The price point you choose during setup establishes the price X charges for your Subscription offering.

What if I want to change the subscription price X charges for my Subscriptions offering?

At this point, it isn’t possible to change the price point you chose when you set up your Subscription offering.

In the future, we hope to offer the ability to change Subscriptions prices.

How much revenue can I earn?

You’ll be eligible to get paid up to 97%* of the revenue X has earned from selling access to your Subscriptions, after in-app purchase fees, until you reach $100,000 in lifetime earnings from X across all X monetization products. See a sample revenue breakdown.

*Note: After $100,000 in lifetime earnings, you can get paid up to 90% of the revenue X has earned after in-app purchase fees. Read our Subscriptions Creator Terms for more on the revenue share and what terms and conditions apply.

Sample revenue breakdown**

**for demonstration purposes only

A creator is based in the United States, and their Subscriptions cost is $5.00. Someone from the United States subscribes (available on iOS and Android, or web),*** paying X in USD. This creator hasn't yet reached $100,000 in lifetime earnings from X across X's monetization products.

***Note: The example below only applies to iOS app-based purchases, and doesn’t include web-based purchases.

$5.00 - Subscription cost

$1.50 - Apple’s in-app purchase fee (currently, 30% of Subscriptions cost under Apple's terms, subject to change by Apple)

$0.10 - X's minimum share of the revenue

$3.39 - Creator is eligible to get paid up to this amount by X

How will I get paid?

Once you're approved to move forward as part of the Subscriptions program, you'll need to set up a confirmed account with Stripe, our payout provider.

Stripe determines payout eligibility and methods based on a creator’s location.

When can I get a payout?

No revenue share payments will be paid to you unless we have first recorded and attributed to your content an amount to meet the minimum payment amount of $50. If you don't meet the $50 threshold, the unpaid amount simply rolls over into the next month until the threshold has been met or exceeded.

Please note that estimated revenue share earnings are adjusted when chargebacks are successfully processed. The earnings amount is also adjusted if Apple or Google issues a refund for a Subscription.

When we make a revenue share payment to you, we will make such payment to you through the Payment Processor approximately 60 days following the end of the month in which we received the revenue for the Subscription. Typically payments are made within the first two weeks of the month. For example, payments for revenue in March will typically occur within the first two weeks of May.

I've met the minimum payment amount. Why can’t I request a payout?

Your payout request may not be processed if there is an information mismatch in your account with our payout provider. You may need to re-add your bank account details (or debit card) to your payout provider.

How do refunds work?

All purchases of Subscriptions are final and non-refundable, unless required by law. That includes Subscriptions linked to X accounts that have been suspended, or that you’ve lost access to for any other reason. Subscribers may Unsubscribe for any reason, at any time, and must do so to ensure that they're no longer billed for the Subscription.

How do chargebacks impact my payout?

When a purchase of a subscription from X is subject to a chargeback, we’ll deduct the amount of the chargeback from the creator’s total estimated revenue share earnings. X reserves the right to charge creators for fees X owes associated with chargebacks, but may choose not to do so. X may also recoup from you any fees associated with any chargebacks.

My payout was processed. Why haven’t I received the funds?

Typically, it takes 3-5 business days for funds to appear in your bank account. In some cases, it can take up to 10 business days.

I file taxes in the US, will I receive a Form 1099?

Yes. People in the US will receive an IRS Form 1099 if they've earned more than $600 USD in the previous tax year. A copy of your 1099 form will be sent to you.
