How to DM block accounts on X

What is Direct Message (DM) blocking?

We're excited to introduce a new privacy feature on X that allows you to control who can send you Direct Messages (DMs) without affecting your overall interaction on the platform. DM blocking enables you to block messages from specific users while still allowing them to interact with you in other ways, such as liking, replying, or mentioning you in public posts.

How to use DM blocking

  1. Start by accessing your Direct Messages and opening the conversation with the user you want to block messages from.
  2. Tap or click on the username or avatar to open the Conversation info screen.
  3. Select the option labeled Block messages from username. This will activate the DM block for that specific user.

What happens when you block DMs from an account?

  • 1:1 Direct Messages: Once you've blocked messages from a user, they will no longer be able to send you Direct Messages, and you will not receive any new messages from them. Similarly, you will not be able to send messages to them.
  • Group messages: Importantly, DM block does not affect group messages. You can still see messages from the blocked user in group chats, and they can see your messages in those groups.
  • Other interactions: The user can still interact with your public posts on X. They can like, reply, or mention you, but they won't be able to initiate or continue a private conversation with you.

Why use DM blocking?

  • Enhanced privacy: This feature gives you more control over your direct messaging environment, allowing you to maintain privacy without completely severing connections.

  • Flexibility: It provides a middle ground for users who might not want to completely block someone from their X experience but need a break from direct communications.

Important notes

  • Reversing the block: If you decide you want to resume direct messaging with the user, simply return to the Conversation Info screen and look for an option to unblock messages.

  • Mutual respect: Remember, while this feature enhances your control, it's always beneficial to communicate openly with others about your preferences for communication.
