About updating your X app
If we suspect that the current version of your X app is vulnerable to security threats, you may experience an app security shutdown. When this happens, you’ll see a message prompting you to update your device’s X app to the latest version. While experiencing limited app functionality, you’ll remain logged in to your account, and can maintain access through X.com.
What to expect if your device’s X app experiences a security shutdown:
- If you’re on X for iOS, you’ll continue to see notification previews that you’ve previously set up on your device. Trying to open a notification will send you to the Update your X app prompt. If you’re on X for Android, you won’t see notifications.
- You’ll continue to receive email notifications that you’ve previously set up for your account. When you click a post embedded in your email notification you’ll see the Update your X app prompt before the post launches on X.com.
- Attempting to open your X for iOS app redirects you to the Update your X app prompt. Your account is still accessible via X.com, and app functionality is fully restored after performing the update.
- Trying to compose a post or send a direct message from any iOS app extension, redirects you to the Update your X app prompt. You’ll need to perform the update to regain access to these features from your app extensions. While the app is shutdown, you can still choose to post and send direct messages from your account via X.com.
- Attempts to use an app shortcut will send you to the Update your X app prompt.
- If you’re on an iOS device and experience an app security shutdown due to a security vulnerability, an attempt to search for a post in your browser, or tapping on a post link will take you to the Update your X app prompt before the post launches on X.com. If you’re on X for Android and have designated your X app as the default option to view posts, tapping on a post link from a search in your browser will open the app and show the Update your X app prompt.
